What is the significance of "Southern Rhythms"? There is a tradition of hospitality, community, and collaborative creative expression in the Southern US. We aim to bring those characteristics to our events. SRDC is based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Owner David Drum was born and raised in the South (Spartanburg SC). David began playing the drums during the 1970's. There was a vibrant music scene represented by groups such as the Allman Brothers Band and Marshall Tucker Band . David was drawn to that music as a drummer.
While never becoming a professional drummer, the music provided a coming-of-age soundtrack and epitomized the beauty and complexity of Southern Culture. Tradition runs deep. The tempo of the seasons still impacts life. The Southern heat acts as a catalyst for rhythmic magic. As David came of age and became a student of Southern US, sociology and music, it became apparent that the South has a unique, poly-rhythmic pulse.
Human rhythms and specifically drumming in the region developed and is developing as cultures combine and collide. Those cultures include First Nations / Native drummers, Scot Irish, German, and Italian immigrants, enslaved people from Africa, and the French, Caribbean,
Jewish and Latin immigrants. The collision and melding of those cultures led to jazz, blues, and rock and roll. All hearts beat and add voice to the rhythmic conversation. Let's continue the conversation with intent!
